| A friend has asked can a metro engine and brakes be fitted to a mini.
Has it been done before, he has been offered a Metro to cannibalise.

| Yes it can with a few exceptions!! The engine and box will go straight in once the engine mounts have been swapped over, the water system needs modifying as the metro engine is without the by pass hose between the head and water pump, I think you drill 6 x 6 mm holes around the flat area of the thermostat to compensate, but don't quote me!! With regards to the brakes, the only bits that are any use to a mini are the discs and calipers as the hubs are totally different offsets etc and apparently if fitted would make a mini a death trap!!! I believe you need to use post '84 hubs which on the mini carried 8.4 discs which would then mean you could only fit 12" and above wheels unless you do a 12" to 10" conversion. Because the metro calipers are four pot, you need a brake pipe splitter kit as the metro has two brake pipe feeds. There are a few other bits and pieces to consider but these are the main ones!! Things like the thermostat housing will need changing, the clutch on the metro has a cable on it so would need a verto slave cylinder fitted to it, the gear linkages are different and you have to plumb in heater valve for the heater. It has been done many many times so is well covered on the web. David Vizard has covered this in detail in one of his books. Hope this helps roger!!! |

| Thanks Luke.
I know the man in question is quite a good engineer, has done a few renovation and modifications to rare cars, I'll see if I can post a link to him on facebook,
Not sure if you could link through facebook, 'Niel Bayliss' is the man, in my friends list.
He has a rare car/prototype from blmc days,a mk2 with side door I believe, as the mk 1 had a rear entry door only, I did hear the designer was intrigued he had renovated/rescued the car.
Not sure if he is known in the mini circles over here but I know he dose a lot of trips to, and around, Holland.
I get the impression some times, if someone says it not possible he'll do it haha

| Should be able to find him in my profile/friends.
He has a load of photos of some of his projects, including some of the accidental modifications to his own body.

| Luke a common conversion on spridgets and mini's is to do away with the bypass hose totally and use a blanking sleeve in lieu of the thermostat workks well tust me done so many of them Bill the grumpy one | |
