| Not sure if this is correct but thought it worth posting as of April 14th, a process called NOVA, that is managed by HMRC to make sure that importers pay whatever vat or duty is due on their cars. You have 14 days from the date of import to register the car with them online, via the HMRC website. The process is automated and you are immediately told what duty is payable and how to go about paying it. The catch is that you can't proceed with registration via DVLA until the system notifies Swansea that you have gone through this process and paid any dues.
The other sting in the tail is that there is a £5 per day fine for any car that is not declared after being in the country for 14 days. So even if you don't intend to register the car straight away (for example it needs a lot of work to get through an MOT), you do need to go through NOVA(Notification of Vehicle Arrivals), as soon as it arrives.
The good news is, that if you are importing a classic from the EU, it is unlikely that you will incur vat or duty.
