| Hi All Been working in Italy this year since january, went home last week to sort my mot etc for another year.At home I had a £80 fine for not renewing my sorn on the TR so I got to wondering if I am abroad for six months or more can I not avoid tax on my daily car, it's MOTed and insured but wont be on UK roads for at least till march next year maybe even longer if I get another contract extension. The government site seems a little vague on this subject only saying you can renew whilst abroad or car has to be in the UK for SORN. Any info would be appreciated on this ATB Dave | |

| As I understand it, any vehicle registered in one EU state and used in another must conform to all legal requirements of the country of registration. Your car will, therefore, have to be taxed even when in Italy.
The good news is that I understand the rules have recently changed so that SORN is now indefinite and does not have to be renewed annually. I have just looked at DVLA's website, and although I could find nothing to say that it has to be renewed, I could not find anything that said explicitly that it does not. It might be worth giving them a call to make sure. | |
