| I'm running twin 1.5" su's, After a little smash about in the lanes through sturry, I suspect my carbs may need balancing as one of them is using alot more oil! Is there anybody that fancies teaching me as I'm clueless and would like to know for future reference! Thanks guys Alan and Oscar | |

| Without having to fiddle with the carbs, take out a spark plug and check its color it should have brownish dry deposits if the carbs are ok, dark/black deposits will indicate that the car may be running a tad rich, this will give you a basic idea of what to do next, apart from topping up the carb oil and enjoying your car. | SU's one of the most basic and easiest carbs to set up. Even a twin, or triple set up. http://www.classic-car-magazine.co.uk/articles/performance-tuning-su-carburetors.html As to one using more oil, how old are the carbs. It might be one of the pistons and dampers are more worn than the other. Are the needles centred fully. If you do do a rebuild, hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, make sure you don's mix up the needles and venturis. Same goes for the dampers and vacuum pistons. I simple carbbalancer and colourtune are worth the money. Roger | |

| PS As to tuning and setting up the most critical point for SU's is the fuel level in the float chamber. Get that right and the rest is childs play | |

| Checked the plugs and think it's probably running rich. As I say, when it comes to carbs I'm totally clueless, you lost me' at venturis and vacuum piston! Alan | |

| Grab yourself a haynes manual for su carbs this will help you to familarise yourself with the type of su you have. i'll see if a pal will loan me a su carb and i'll give you a few pointers, i've owned a few mini's in my youth ex mechanic an all that, i used to buy bit and bobs from a fella named bill richards iirc who used to race mini's years ago, but thats another mini story lol |
