Mini front brake shoes too big!

Subject: Mini front brake shoes too big! Wed Apr 27, 2011 8:58 am

Hi, can anyone help, I bought some new front brake shoes for the mini and they dont fit. The old ones I had werent that worn down but were on inspection 1/4 inch narrower. Are the old ones rear shoes fitted to the front? Has anyone come across anything like this?

Put them in the wash too hot? That'll shrink them.

Sounds like you either have a later set or indeed someone has put bigger ones on it from even possibly a different car altogether!! Not sure bit I think the s had bigger rear shoes so maybe it was an upgrade back then to improve the drum brakes by fitting the larger s rear shoes! Is yours single leading or twin leading as there may be a difference there.

It has the single leading shoe. The brake shoes I have only just dont fit, do you think it would be an idea to cut back a bit of the metal on the shoe to make it fit? They fit inside the drum perfectly so i see no reson why it shouldnt work.

If I was you I would upgrade to twin leading as they are a far superior set up by all accounts!! I have not done this conversion before but it is a very popular conversion which I'm sure if you google it there will be something showing / telling you all that's involved!!

Yer, i had considered it but have got all the stuff for the single leading shoe, may have to resort to the twin. Will let you know how it goes, got distracted today and took apart the heater and motor to clean it up and paint it.

Hi ,( I know this is an old thread ) the shoes you have bought are for the twin leading shoes ,( these are a wider shoe ) if you have the single leading shoes then a set of rear shoes are needed . Are the ones you are trying to fit 1.5" wide ? The rear ones should be 1.25" and will fit the front . Some very early cars had the smaller rear type 1.25""wide fitted the same as the rear .

Hi there, thanks for this info, I still havent fitted the front brakes due to the car being in the welders and sprayers, (and a mini clubman coming in the way!) I will go and get some rear brake shoes for her when I get round to doing the brakes.

Ooh and another thought, I bought some flexi front brake hoses for my front disks on my clubman, the disks are from a 1988 mini city but the hoses did not fit!?! The thread going into the caliper is too big on the new hose, has anyone else had this problem?
