To be honest Tom, the new shoes were in the boot when I got the car so there is a chance they could be wrong.
They look the same laid on top of each other and the only visible difference only being the wear.
I must say the old shoes are very worn and the drum seems really tight on them scratch

I'll have another look at them on Thursday, I'm probably missing something really silly:D

Tony,

Have you checked that the handbrake mechanism hasn't seized. The drawlink mechanism on the rear of the wheel cylinder is prone to sticking in the 'on' position. It's a common problem - have to free mine about once a year.

Hi Andy,

It all seems to be working fine. I took the cover plate off and the mechanism inside looks to be closed tight.
I'm going to have another look tomorrow (Friday) so while it's in bits i'll take a couple of photos and post them up.

Tony

Had to change my plans again and will be having a look at them on Thursday and Friday.
I will take some pictures on Friday if I don't have any luck with them and post up Friday eve.

Hi Andy, no not yet sadly.

I need to pull her out of the garage to get at both sides. I can push her out but I need to drive her back in because the road slopes away outside the garage.

This is where my next problem started Rolling Eyes I haven't been able to start her because of a couple of things, renewed the started which made a massive difference but found the fuel pump didn't seem to be pumping petrol.
Took the pump off and cleaned, checked diaphragm etc, pumped by hand and it seemed to have loads of suction & output.

Sucked petrol by mouth up the fuel line so I know petrol is flowing.
Put the pump back on the car and it still wont pump fuel. At the carb end I can feel a weak pulse but no fuel.
Had this pump off a number of times now and each time checked all the seals around the glass bowl etc.

So I bought a new fuel pump (ebay) Put that on and she fired up and run for about a minute then stopped.
That pump seem to have stopped pumping.
Removed the new pump and took off the top to look at the diaphragm and think it may be leaking. (one of the screw holes seems slightly torn.

Searched the internet for repair kits for both petrol pumps, both have different diaphragms.
Found the matching diaphragms for each pump, on different websites and ordered them (by matching the pics on the sites with the diaphragms that I have)

Both suppliers sent me the same diaphragms, which are completely different from the ones I have Shocked
On complaining I have been told "that's all they do now try a new pump" AAAAARRRRRRRRGG.

My Original diaphragm.

Can't help I'm afraid Tony, as I know nothing about the mechanical pumps. Ironically, I always envied the 80's mechanical pump as my electric one frequently gives trouble, though easily repaired. Seems I'm better off than I realised.

Who were the suppliers? I have always found John Wearing very knowledgable and helpful; if it was he who said the diagphram is no longer available then there's probably little point in trying to find one. You could try Richard Hedger (haven't got his number to hand but google Richard's Reclaimed Rovers) as he may well have a secondhand pump.

Just had another look at the pictures. I assume you've already ruled out the possibility of altering the spade on the new one to match the original?

Hi Andy the suppliers were Brookwell's Land rover parts and Island 4x4 land rover specialists.
I had thought of altering the new one to match the old pump diaphragm, but with new pumps retailing around £17 I'm thinking of sending both parts back and trying to track down the pump that the new diaphragms are made for.

Thanks for the info about John Wearing Rover Parts & Richards Rovers, I have found their details and I will give him a ring tomorrow before I order another pump or go any further.

I did think of fitting a electric pump, do you know if I would need to fit a regulator or is it as straight forward as fitting a electric pump and a blanking plate to cover the old pump opening?

Thanks again for your help
Tony

Tony
An electric pump is/was a common upgrade.
Both times I have used them, once on my Beetle ( the old pump couldnt pump quick enough for a pair of 40mm twin chokes)
And the electric pump on the DLM.
Both have been straight swaps, the only mods are as you say blanking plates for the old pump mounts.

One thing to make sure of is that the electric pump is suitable for your car.

Worth contacting these people, might even be able to help with the mechanical pump.
They will be able to advise on what electric pump for yours.

Hi Roger, thanks for the help I just had a look at their site, if its just a straight swap I think I would rather go down the electric route. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Thanks Tony

Some of you may know that a few months ago I bought a industrial sewing machine with the idea of having a go at recovering my own seats. Laughing Laughing

I then subscribed to a couple of youtubers that posted videos of how to use and thread the machine.

Then I had ago, I recovered the rover arm rests with cheap vinyl that i bought from ebay. (will be using vinyl until i'm good enough to use leather)
This was my first attempt and I have worked out that I used the wrong piping stuff and the stitching needs to be neater, but hey, this is just a practice with no experience & having never used a sewing machine before.
